Software jobs and their effects!

I think there is a social problem due to the enormous stress the software jobs are creating on our young workforce..The BPO's, late night working hours, extended work hours, tight & unreasonable job targets are putting a big burden and drives up the stress levels to intolerable levels. The stress does exist in all kinds of jobs; but the recent increase in divorce, home violence and suicide incidents has driven me to open this topic. In the current scenario the youth are flocking in millions to the software jobs  which gives them the high salaries and posh life styles. But beneath this golden fleece lies umpteen challenges for them to face.
The current economic downtrend has seen huge layoffs and salary reductions which has stranded many software professionals. They are forced to cut down their lavishes and adjust their spending. But not many find the change manageable...This is a worrying trend...The earlier Indian system of a closely knit family (Joint family) used to be such a fine medicine in dealing with stress, boredom and loneliness. Now even small families are scattered; both husband and wife go to work..leaving the child/children at crèche or home giving very less time for mutual interaction. Feeling, thoughts, problems are not heard and there is no or very few people to confide in or talk to. Suicides and divorces are unfathomable, dangerous happenings which must never occur in any society.  Husband and wife live in separate places with children either living with single parent or at a boarding school. The upbringing of a growing generation of children is leaving much to be desired. Both parents role in a good child personality development is essential. I have more to say but only after you voice your opinion on these alarming changes....

  2. yup i have been around for 5 years and can see that the stress levelsare very low compared to wht my dad carried on for 4 decades as an intel officer.. i wud say stress is close to normal levels...
Yeah the money factor is there but with the current trends there is a correction bound to happen . and this is healthy because we were ignoring other jobs for a while.. if u see tambrahm history, we started with govt srvice, then bank then CAs and now s/w we just go in a huge majority after the trendy job of the season.. i wud say s/w is neither as shiny as they portray and nor as glum as some doomsday sayers see..

  3. Pressures of working in the corporate world I guess is a much hyped stuff and perhaps partly stems from the job insecurity that’s inherent to it. As for the joint family vs. nuclear family, the virtues of the former can never be overstated. However, the nuclear family system is here to continue and here the parents play a major role in teaching the child the joys of caring and sharing which, kids brought up in joint family system learn naturally. A piece of apple shared with others is worth much more than the whole apple one has for himself and anticipation of that piece of apple is also a joy in itself. And most of today’s kids are denied of these little joys in their lives!!

Television serials is another thing I too think about, though I don’t watch any. Most serials are addictive and the suspense factor in them naturally keeps the viewer glued to them. My take on this is the serial addiction will naturally vanish if one turns attention to reading, be it books or novels or magazines or spiritual stuff. Here too parents have a huge role to play in inculcating good reading habits in children. It’s better and probably a lot easier to let the bad habits such as these die a natural death than trying to suppress them forcefully.

Working couples is yet another thing I feel strongly about. I am of the opinion that a child rightfully deserves mother’s care and time much more than he/she gets from her if she is a career woman. Of course there are many cases where both have to work to earn a decent living, but I feel it does wonders for the physical and emotional growth of a child who has the caring mother as soon as it’s back home from the school. Hence, in my personal opinion, unless the economic situation absolutely warrants it, a mother should stay home!

As for the present day society, Lord Krishna has beautifully summarised (or foretold??!) the general state of affairs in today’s life (ref: Bhagavad Gita verses 16:10 to 16:18). And the solution has been provided by Him well in advance (ref: verse 2:70).

  5. Thanks Viji, the pertinent sections from the Gita are summarised below.

    Gita 16:10 to 16:18

Taking shelter of insatiable lust and absorbed in the conceit of pride and false prestige, the demoniac, thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent

They believe that to gratify the senses is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus until the end of life their anxiety is immeasurable. Bound by a network of hundreds of thousands of desires and absorbed in lust and anger, they secure money by illegal means for sense gratification.

The demoniac person thinks: “So much wealth do I have today, and I will gain more according to my schemes. So much is mine now, and it will increase in the future, more and more. He is my enemy, and I have killed him, and my other enemies will also be killed. I am the lord of everything. I am the enjoyer. I am perfect, powerful and happy. I am the richest man, surrounded by aristocratic relatives. There is none so powerful and happy as I am. I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give some charity, and thus I shall rejoice.” In this way, such persons are deluded by ignorance.

Self-complacent and always impudent, deluded by wealth and false prestige, they sometimes proudly perform sacrifices in name only, without following any rules or regulations.

Bewildered by false ego, strength, pride, lust and anger, the demons become envious of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is situated in their own bodies and in the bodies of others, and blaspheme against the real religion.

    Verse 2:70

"A person who is not disturbed by the incessant flow of desires—that enter like rivers into the ocean, which is ever being filled but is always still—can alone achieve peace, and not the man who strives to satisfy such desires."
